Automatic rifles-while in their element at short range-tend to spray bullets haphazardly at targets further away, so you'll want to shoot in short controlled bursts to maximize your damage and reduce your misses if they're far away. Swapping weapons is done using the R2 button, and the crosshairs will change accordingly depending on what you're wielding.
